Bitcoin offers users a way to circumvent government and corporate restrictions on transactions. For example, WikiLeaks couldn't receive funds from donors in 2010 because VISA and PayPal refused to allow funds to be transferred through their systems. Bitcoins, on the other hand, are completely peer-to-peer and can be transferred to anyone with an internet connection who is willing to receive them as payment.
